Scott Evan Freeman
1999 National Hammer Dulcimer Champion
About me...

I was born in Danville, Illinois and soon after my family moved to Lafayette, Indiana.  I became interested in music at an early age by playing drums in junior high school.  I had the good fortune of growing up with the Indiana Fiddlers' Gathering in my hometown and was exposed to traditional music at an early age.  I started playing banjo when I was 12 and later taught myself to play guitar.  I played in several bluegrass bands including Classified Grass that featured a then 13 year old fiddler named Alison Krauss.  After the bluegrass days I started working with the Indiana Fiddlers' Gathering in Battle Ground booking bands and making new friends.  In 1994, Malcolm Dalglish came to Battle Ground and I was re-introduced to the hammer dulcimer.  Malcolm challenged me to get a dulcimer and start hammering.

In 1995 I started building a few dulcimers and decided to compete in some regional hammer dulcimer contests.  In 1996, I place 3rd in the Mid-East regionals and later competed at the national hammer dulcimer contest in Winfield, Kansas where I placed 2nd.  I again competed at Winfield in 1998 and placed 2nd.  In 1999 I won the national hammer dulcimer contest and a beautiful new R.L. Tack and Son hammer dulcimer.

I began playing with a group call The Hammerheads and we toured for about 3 years.  Later I joined with a group of friends and we formed Freeman, Bell & Molter.  In 2002 the New Acoustic Quintet was formed and we started playing a style of Celtic/bluegrass/jazz that allowed us to record the album, The Time.  Today I play with a group of friends in coffee houses and do the occasional wedding.  I do hammer dulcimer workshops and am deeply involved in the worship arts ministry at Covenant Church in West Lafayette.

All my recordings are with Ouibache (WEE-ba-SHAY) Records, a small independent record label dedicated to traditional and Americana music.  I play an R.L. Tack Pro and a Michael Allen - Cloud Nine 20/19/8 full chromatic dulcimer.  I am available for concerts, workshops, weddings and private instruction on a limited basis.
